ABILA HIRES FIRST CFO

Jeff Cross, AbilaNonprofit software vendor Abila has hired Jeff Cross as the company's first chief financial officer. Cross is in charge of the finance, accounting and legal departments for the Austin, Texas-based company and will primarily be responsible for revenue recognition, forecasting, and merger and acquisition activities. Cross was most recently a consultant with DigitalGlobe from September 2014 until taking the Abila job.

AVALARA DEVELOPING CLIENT PORTAL

Patrick Falle, AvalaraHardly surprising in these days of portals, but Avalara is planning a customer portal. The  information comes in a job posting for a  core platform engineer for its cloud connect team by the company's channel chief Patrick Falle. "This role brings together the core products of the Avalara business, and helps provide a coherent experience to our users," Falle wrote. "You will manage the engineering process and deliver value to the customer through development of a streamlined user interface (Customer Portal) and a platform for new content that will launch Avalara in to new markets."

AKTION TAKES ON ACUMATICA

Scott Irwin, Aktion AssociatesAktion Associates, a software reseller based in Maumee, Ohio, has begun carrying Acumatica. The parties have not issued an announcement, but Aktion is featuring the product, which has both on-premise and cloud version, on its website. Headed by Scott Irwin, Aktion is already in the cloud with Intacct, and it says, with hosted versions of Sage's construction and real estate applications through its Cloud Services. It also offers Deltek and notes that product, along with Sage and Intacct applications, serves project-based businesses.

RECKON EASES VESTING RULES

ReckonThe board of directors Reckon, Intuit's former Australian distributor, has loosened the conditions for vesting of long-term incentives. The board based its decisions on the fact that Reckon cut its ties with Intuit in 2012 and began marketing products in its own name. It also factored in the decline in license sales as Reckon made its move to the cloud with applications such as Reckon One. Incentives for 2011 to 2013 were allowed to vest even though the target levels of total shareholder return were not reached.

SOVOS BUYS SHIPCOMPLIANT

Jason Eckenroth, ShipCompliant Newly formed Sovos Compliance has acquired Boulder-based ShipCompliant, a compliance and tax software publisher for the alcohol beverage market. Sovos was formed in February when its owner, Vista Equity Partners, welded together TaxWare, Convey Compliance Systems and VAT Resource. We've been talking about the impact of private equity and this shows one battlefield in indirect tax; acquisition of specialized vendors. Sovos and ShipCompliant will integrate their compliance products.

REALWORLD CLOUD COMING

PassportThe words "RealWorld Cloud Coming" on the website of the Passport Software home page were a bit jarring. But there they are on the home page at www.pass-port.com. For those who have not been in this field forever, the Passport Business Solutions application is the old RealWorld Classic kept alive and nurtured. Great Plains purchased RealWorld before the death of the dinosaurs, actually in March 2000 after the world did not end with Y2K (although the RealWorld package quickly was killed).

SAGE NAMES REVENUE EXEC

Rich Spring, Sage Sage North America has hired Rich Spring as chief revenue officer. The company says his job focuses on the New Customer Acquisition Group. Spring had a long stint at anti-virus vendor Symantec where he worked from August 1994 through June 2013. In his final job, he was SVP for the Americas, although his LinkedIn Page does not show when he assumed that job. Sage will need to reshoot the executive photo page as Joe Langner is still part of the group shot, although his individual picture and bio has been removed.

WENNSOFT TAKEN OVER

John Jazwiec, WennSoft WennSoft became the latest company in this space to be touched by private equity investors this week. LLR Partners made "a strategic investment" in Los Angeles, Calif.-based WennSoft. John Jazwiec has become WennSoft's CEO. His predecessor, Jim Wenninger, is shown on WennSoft's website as "Founder and Industry Strategist". The parties did not disclose the amount of the investment, but a spokesperson said LLR is now a majority owner.

SAGE SEEKS NFP PERSON, SO?

SageSage is seeking a project manager with an intriguing set of qualifications. The posting says the candidate more than six years experience in the software industry. It also notes that "exposure to the government and nonprofit market is preferred (specifically around the fund accounting and fund-raising elements of those organizations). A query sent to Sage brought what appears to be an official no response and since the ad is already being passed around the channel, the speculation began without this item needing to be published here.
