And most important, the news business is like almost all businesses: success is built upon relationships. Especially since journalists cannot travel as much as some business people (and generally do not wish too), the key goal in attending events is to nurture relationships in order to harvest information the rest of the year. Much of the discussion is not about software, but about how a journalist can keep on top of the news. My theories have always revolved around competence—know as much about the topic as possible—and work—investigate every possible source of information, especially if it seems like competitors will not.
