HOPPING ONTO THE SAASWAGON

The VAR signup war is on in the cloud. Acumatica, Intacct and NetSuite all issued press releases this week about their newly recruited VARs.  We’ll pass on the box shore for the moment, who has signed up the most, the biggest or best. The fact that the pace of announcements is picking up so rapidly, with both NetSuite and Intacct making inroads at accounting firms, showing the scope of the change. And that can mean only one thing – companies are looking at and buying Internet-based financial applications at a pace we haven’t seen before.

Intacct had one Webinar that drew 1,400 participants. SAP hasn’t made as much noise about its enlistment of VARs for Business By Design, but it seems to have gone after fewer, but higher quality players. While Intacct has done well in signing CPA firms, NetSuite scored a coup there picking up Baker Tilley Virchow Krause. The importance of the Baker Tilly deal is that the CPA firm is developing versions of NetSuite to reach specialized markets, particularly the services industry and the wholesale/distribution vertical. And NetSuite Zach Nelson said his company will be using the channel to reach verticals. This is where the important battle is – getting into those markets and using the strengths each product has to address them. Last week I mentioned a VAR that passed on Acumatica and choose Intacct because of its project features. Once we get past the PR puff, this is where the important decisions are being made. Meanwhile, Intacct noted it had signed Intuitive Technologies, a Mountain States VAR, as it looks like if Intacct has 40 more VARs it needs to enlist, we’ll get 40 more press releases. Acumatica, at least, did a compilation of signings.
