ACT REBOUNDS TO RETAIL

A year ago Sage pulled Act, the venerable sales management tool, off the retail shelves. This month, Sage North America has shoved it back on the shelves, which is interesting in an era in which retail sales of software has become less important, but perhaps not unimportant.

An announcement from Alex Taylor, senior national channel sales manager for Act, said that Act Pro 2013 went to retail on June 1. Taylor outlined four strategic goals and the first two suggest what has happened in the last year and those goals are acquire new customers and "Achieve revenue targets in line with the business unit’s expectations for H2FY12 & beyond." Can you say "ouch"? Sage also wants to re-established and expand Act's "footprint in the e-tail/retail marketplace while minimizing revenue cannibalization from existing channels." It like that phrase about minimizing cannibalization. The fourth goal is the more generic one of building brand awareness. They should have renamed it. Act could have become Sage 10 or 15 or something.
