MICROSOFT FINISHES MAJOR FARGO EXPANSION

microsoft briefing centerMicrosoft has completed expansion of its facility in Fargo, N.D., with the opening of a third building that increased the amount of space available to 120,000 sq. ft. That announcement came this week and, having been at the groundbreaking, it seemed appropriate to reflect on the fact that since then, Microsoft has trimmed several thousand employees.

Outsourcing jobs to Fargo probably represents a good cost-cutting move, however.  Maybe Microsoft will require some staffers to relocate, but anyone forced to transfer from Bellevue, Wash., to Fargo (who wasn't a native) probably needs to be placed on suicide watch. Besides the operations of Microsoft Business Solutions (minus important executives), the Fargo campus also is the site of the Executive Briefing Center, along with the North American Customer Service and Support department for the Dynamics line. This also provided an interesting test for Microsoft search on Bing. I had found an article about this celebration on Edge, a blog in the Dynamics area, but couldn't remember where to find Edge. The Microsoft search (www.microsoft.com) turned up many articles from 2007 that the building was expected to be completed this year. Ugh. Bing turned up the article about CEO Steve Ballmer touring the facility this week. It was No. 6 of articles found by the search. The rest were the 2007 to-be-completed stories. So much for finely tuned searching.
