EXACT DOING MAJOR RETOOLING

Exact logoExact CEO Martijn Janmaat said last week that the company was adjusting strategy, not adopting a new strategy. But in wide ranging meeting with analysts Janmaat, who became CEO on August 23, gave a frank analysis of his company’s many shortcomings and ways to fix them, much of this stemming from a study by the Boston Consulting Group.

Among the problems he cited on the Webcast were poor go-to-market strategy, relations with resellers, unclear roles for resellers and the direct sales effort, a lack of strong relationship with accountants, a company stretched thin in too many countries, major product lines that need an overhaul, a too-horizontal approach and a SaaS strategy that can take on-premise customers to the Web. Changes include a corporate reorganization that will put a technology representative, yet to be hired, on the executive committee and a realignment of the company’s regions. That included combining the EMEA and APAC regions into an International Division and consolidating the Netherlands and Belgium under a Benelux division. The company also plans to concentrate on five “headquarters-rich” countries -- Benelux, United Kingdom, Germany France and the United States, the latter new to Exact’s definition. Janmaat says the company is studying other countries to determine which subsidiaries to keep and which to dispose of, which could include selling operations or turning them into resellers. Many points stemmed from a study by consultants, including the Boston Computer Group. And Janmaat’s analyst of Exact’s having lost focus and seen its installed base deteriorate over the last five to 10 years isn’t a great comment about the performance of Raj Patel, who was CEO from 2005 through 2010.
