A CROWD ON ACCOUNTNG'S LOW-END

Erik van der Meijden, ExactIf you have been following the market, you've noticed that there are a lot of companies that want to sell low-cost accounting software in the United States. Of course, there is Intuit with TurboTax Online. Then there is that crowd that has come over from another country or is planning the trip. Wave Accounting is from Canada. Sage brought its Sage One over from Europe last year and Exact has plans to do the same with its Exact Online before 2014.

Then there is Dynamics reseller mHance in the United Kingdom which has launched a low-cost, online product that is likely to end up here. So what is drawing this crowd? The fact that the European economy stinks probably helps, but it goes beyond that. One reason is that there are lots of potential customers here. But the most important probably relate to developing a feeder system and picking up new customers. In the earnings webcast for his company's 2012 results, Exact CEO Erik van der Meijden last month said that most of the customers for Exact Online are new to the Netherlands-based organization. And we consistently have heard that from Intuit about QuickBooks Online - the customers moving to the Internet-based application are largely not those switching from desktop QuickBooks version.
