I get the feeling that if Intuit started selling a line of hair spray labeled "QuickBooks" that it would quickly dominate the market. Everything appeared to be working well as the software company reported results for the year ended July 31. Net income hit $969 million, a 165-percent increase from $365 million the prior year. Revenue reached $4.69 billion fiscal 2016, up 12 percent from $4.2 million for 2015.

Xero has selected Kahuna Accounting was named Accounting Partner of Year for 2016 and Beyond Balanced Books was named Bookkeeping Partner of the Year. The awards were presented at the recent Xerocon, the cloud software vendor's annual conference, in San Francisco. Based in Bloomington, Ill., Kahuna provides accounting services to entrepreneurs and small law firms.

Danish VAR and developer Columbus this week reported a 55-percent increase in its net result on an 8-percent rise in revenue for the first half ended June 30. Columbus attributed much of the growth to its services income with its acquisitions, including that of InterDyn BMI last year, playing a major role in growth.

Australia-based Reckon—battling in the low-cost software market in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom—reported a 33.9-percent drop in earnings on a 6.4-percent rise in revenue for the half ended June 30. Reckon, the former QuickBooks distributor in Australia, competes with MYOB and Xero in Australia and New Zealand and in May introduced its Reckon One in the U.K., where it battles against Xero and Sage.

Intuit is stepping up its message that its QuickBooks and professional tax software operations are part of the same system. In this week's earnings webcast for the year ended July 31, CEO Brad Smith emphasized the company's decision to forego regular price increase for its Lacerte, ProSeries and ProConnect Tax Online products in favor of building the prices into the accounting software lines.

Paige Erickson, who become VP of partner strategy and programs in October, is leaving Sage. Her move was announced internally by Nancy Harris, EVP of sales and partner programs. Harris will handle Erickson's duties until a successor is found. Her departure will be on September 2.

Columbus has named Marianne Woldbye-Tholin to the new position of VP of the company's global ColumbusCare organization. She was most recently VP for project management in KMD from June 2015 through July 2016, and was with TRYG from October 2012 through May 2015 and was director of business development from October 2012 through May 2015.

Brian Nunes, formerly head of marketing for SWK Technologies, has taken a job with MicroAccounting. Nunes' job change comes as Livingston, N.J.-based SWK is in a state of flux following the departure of CEO Jeff Roth in May. Nunes had served as SWKs VP of marketing, channel, and strategic alliances from June 2015.

Jamie Sutherland, who spearheaded Xero's entry into the United States, has left the company. Since July, Sutherland has been an entrepreneur-in-residence at Norwest Venture Partners, which is headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif. Sutherland was president of Xero U.S. from November 2011 through March 2015.
