Exact is trying to figure out a better way to market its Exact Online application in the United States and may decide to involve its Macola VARs. The product is available on the Intuit App store. But since the introduction of the cloud product earlier this year, 26 companies have purchased it and Exact has labeled the progress as being slightly behind plan. "It seems difficult to find QuickBooks customers who are ready to go for an industry solution," Erik van der Meijden said during this months' earnings webcast for the first quarter ended March 31.

QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions hit 100,000 subscribers during the third quarter ended April 30, a 17.9-percent rise from 85,000 a year earlier. It would be nice to intelligently discuss why this product keeps growing. But it's not material to results and does not get analyzed during earnings webcasts. Intuit has issued no press releases about the product, enhancements or its channel program for ages. It has awards for its QBES resellers, but unless the partner issues its own release, that information doesn't see the light of day.
SAGE UNVEILS X3 VERSION 7

Sage's introduction of X3 Version 7 last week was a formality. The website for the product – the only Sage midmarket package with its own website – was already packed with V. 7 info. More attention was paid to what Sage's Europe CEO Alvaro Ramirez meant when he said, "Our brand is a disaster." I'm of the opinion he didn't mean it quite the way it sounds but why hand competitors a recruiting tool? The remarks suggest that the rebranding campaign of putting the word "Sage" in front of all products has not worked as well as hoped. Version 7 will be first rolled out in on-premise form next month.

Xero is moving its North American conference from the fall - the time of year the first and so-far only show was held - to the spring of 2015. The New Zealand-based cloud software company held its first conference in the United States in September 2013 but will not be holding another this fall. "We heard from a lot of our accounting partners that the spring is a better time for them than the fall," says Sharna Brockett, Xero's director of public relations and social media in the United States.
NETSUITE TAKES THE LONG VIEW

An important thing about NetSuite's product announcements was not what was said, but when it was said. "I was surprised they talked about things so far in the future," said one attendee, referring to the announcement of the 2015 version of the cloud product. "As they deal with increasingly large companies, they have to do that," I replied. And he agreed. NetSuite's average selling pricing has continued to climb—up 50 percent over the prior year as noted in the webcast of the March quarter earnings announcements.

NetSuite has launched a business process outsourcing program that will enable channel members to offer services on the NetSuite platform. "This is truly outsourcing business processing," Amede Hungerford, NetSuite's marketing VP, said this week at the company's SuiteWorld conference. "It's not a write-up platform." For anyone who missed the latter point, Hungerford was taking a shot at competitor Intacct whose cloud-based application is used for accounting firms to deliver write-up services to clients, a major line of business for that company.

Avalara announced its purchase of the FuelQuest excise tax line from Zytax two weeks ago. But it did not disclose terms. However, a recent SEC filing from the Bainbridge Island, Wash.-based sales tax software company suggests an amount. Avalara reported it sold $26.3 million in equity in connection with an acquisition. The total amount of the shares for sale was just short of $37 million (three dollars short to be exact).
