WHETHER GEMACCOUNTS?

Ken Del Gobbo, GemaccountsThere's always an opportunity for speculation when a company makes an announcement of an entry into a new market, and then nothing seems to happen. So it is with Australian vendor Gemaccounts, which announced its entry into the America market in August, hired industry veteran Ken Del Gobbo as president in October and issued its last press release do date in December. More peculiar is that its last tweet was on April 15--8 Helpful Accounting Software Apps For Businesses.

EXACT ACCOUNTANT PROGRAM TO BYPASS U.S.

Erik van der Meijden, ExactExact plans to launch a worldwide accountancy program for its Exact Online cloud app this year. However, that is worldwide minus the United States, was the answer to a follow-up question I asked about the program's announcement this month by CEO Erik van der Meijden about the first quarter financial results. The fact that there would be a program was all that was said. The follow-up to Exact public relations drew this comment:

M-HANCE U.S. VP TO SAGE VAR

AcumenWhile I was pondering whatever happened to the CEO of m-Hance, a once rapidly growing Dynamics reseller in the United Kingdom, another piece of news popped up. LinkedIn connections led to the fact that Paul Crompton, VP of sales for m-Hance in the United States, has moved to Sage reseller Acumen Information Systems, as VP of business development. Crompton held the Orlando, Fla.-based job with the British company from June 2013 through March 2014.

XERO CUSTOMERS; 2014 LOSS UP

Rod Drury, XeroThere is always the glass half-empty, half-full view. In cloud software, it tends to be unimportant if there is water in the glass as long as there's a big glass for lots water in the future. So when Xero reported its results for the year ended March 31, the question of how much it lost is probably not the most important issue as we've learned from NetSuite. It's about grabbing market share for cloud products. This is not a flip argument. Remember when Amazon wasn't making any money and that was a major issue.

INTUIT TURNS IN STRONG QUARTER

Brad Smith, IntuitLet's just say that the goals of Intuit CEO Brad Smith are not modest. When it comes to low-cost cloud applications, "Our goal is to win ever new small business customer and to win every cloud decision." Whatever the chances of that are, the results for the second quarter ended April 30 were very good. Net income was $1.37 billion, a 6-percent increase from $1.29 billion in last year's corresponding period. Revenue was $3.79 billion in the recently ended period, up 7 percent from $3.54 billion a year earlier.

NETSUITE: THE ART OF THE SHOW

NetSuite broke new ground in exhibit hall management for this midmarket accounting business this year, highly effective management. At least, it did one thing not seen at most (if any) accounting conferences in the last two decades, setting the entrance to the keynote hall through the exhibits and leaving time between breakfast and the 9 am keynote. This is obviously a benefit to paying exhibitors. It turned out to be a much longer time than expected to see exhibits when the San Jose Convention Center technical system wasn't up to snuff, a fact likely to play in negotiations.

HOW SOON THE LOW-END SHAKEOUT?

Guy Berruyer, SageIntuit added 165,000 QuickBooks Online subscribers over the last year and Xero tacked on 157,000. So how many are available to FreshBooks, Sage One, Wave, Kashoo and who knows how many other low-accounting products? We know not everyone will make and executives are starting to point to a coming shakeout. In Sage's first-half earnings webcast earlier this month, chief executive Guy Berruyer rattled off some names and said he could think of at least 10 others in the United Kingdom. "I don't expect them all to make it," he said. Neither do most of us.

EPICOR SPINS 2Q RESULTS

Joseph Cowan, Epicor SoftwareIt was all an odd schedule--a company holding its earnings conference call 12 days after it filed the 10-Q for the quarter and the CEO bragging about the progress the company has made since he joined in October. Of course, later in the earnings call, CEO Joseph Cowan denied a Wall Street Journal report that Epicor Software is for sale. That was after he reported the company's recent Insights conference was, "The most surprising and motivational event I have ever attended."
