SAGE NAMES NEW SIMPLY CHIEF

Nancy HarrisSage North America has named Nancy Harris, most recently chief operating officer at ESO Solutions, as VP and general manager of Sage Simply Accounting. Harris replaces Jamie Sutherland, who resigned the position in April, as mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter. Harris runs pretty much everything related to Simply, a low-end accounting system that is sold principally in Canada. Before the stint at ESO, she spent nearly a decade with Asure Software. BUYING DELAYS PUNISH SERENIC

After ending 2011 on a good note, Serenic slipped to a $177,375 loss for the first quarter ended May 30 on a 17.4-percent drop in revenue. The loss was in contrast to net income of $8.888 in last year's corresponding period. Read more...

SUTHERLAND TO HEAD U.S. XERO OPS

Jamie SutherlandXero, an online accounting system based in New Zealand, is moving into the United States market. The company named a managing director for this country during last month’s annual meeting and while the name wasn’t officially released then, it didn't take long to come up with the name, Jamie Sutherland, who had led the Sage Simply Accounting effort, as the person who got the job.

SWK PARENT SURGES

SilverSun Technologies, the parent of Sage reseller SWK Technologies, reported a strong second quarter, ended June 30, as it continued a turnaround that began in the first quarter.  SilverSun, known previously as Trey Resources, reported net income of $2.4 million for the most recently ended quarter, compared to a loss of $789,416 in last year's corresponding period.

CCH BUYS SPEEDTAX

Mike SabbatisThe sales-and-use tax business in the mid-market has become more competitive this week with CCH's purchase of SpeedTax of Laguna Hills, Calif. No terms were announced and SpeedTax would hardly be material to the results of CCH's parent, Wolters Kluwer. CCH is keeping most SpeedTax employees, although CEO Anton Donde is going to be  getting the usual consulting job on the way out the door.

CHANNEL: THE 60 PERCENT SOLUTION

The fact that both NetSuite and SAP reported that their channel business had grown by 60 percent in the June quarter might mean something for the future of cloud computing. Or it might just mean that both companies started with a very small base. Since neither company released actual channel revenue, we don't really know. But it’s clear that Microsoft, with 19-percent increase in Dynamics revenue for the same quarter, had good growth but nothing near that figure. Read more...

Literally.  It was July 29, 1991 when I began working as technology editor at Accounting Today when it was owned by a very fine trade publishing company, Lebhar Friedman. NETSUITE SALES, LOSS GROW

NetSuite likes to report its earnings on a non-GAAP basis, but even there, its net income for the second quarter ended June 30 dropped by 15.8 percent to $1.6 million, down from $1.9 million a year earlier. The GAAP loss grew to $9.8 million, up 35.2 percent from $7.2 million. Meanwhile, revenue for the most recently reported period rose to $57.8 million, an increase of 22.8 percent from $47.1 million in last year’s corresponding period.
