Anyone in the PC market needs to get up to speed on Azure. That thought got a push this week as Acumatica, a Bethesda, Md.-based marketer of online financial and CRM applications, said its SaaS app runs on Windows Azure. I don't remember any announcements from other SaaS vendors in this space about Azure, but we will see more.

SAGE REVVING UP PAYMENTS BIZ

Sage spent a lot of money in 2006 to buy the operation that is now its payment processing
division. So far, it's not had a big impact. But the company has renewed its effort to make payment processing a pervasive part of its product lines. At this month's Sage Summit, CEO Sue Swenson said one problem was the levels at which planning and implementation had to take place weren't talking to each other.

During yesterday's conference call about first quarter earnings, Intuit CEO Brad Smith said that new Intuit investor Relational Investors, doesn't have any demands on Intuit. That came in response to an anlayst who asked if Relational principal David Batchelder, who is going on the Intuit board in December, came in with any demands.

QB ROLLS ON DESPITE ECONOMY

Even in a down economy, and with help from some serious discounting, Intuit managed to squeeze out an increase in QuickBooks units for the first quarter ended September 30. Let's start with the mid-market QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions. It had 39,000 active users at the end of the quarter, an increase of 14.7 percent from 34,000 a year. (Active users are those on maintenance).

EXACT SOFTWARE REBRANDS

Exact Software has rebranded itself and launched a new Web site by dropping the word "software" from its corporate name. Exact is probably still better known in the United States by the Macola and Progression product names than by the corporate name, a problem faced by some major software vendors whose corporate moniker is far less known than their chief products' names.
QURIUS RENEWS DEBT REPAYMENT

Qurius, a Dynamics reseller headquartered in the Netherlands, has resumed debt payments that were suspended earlier this year. The debt was about $3.7 million. However, during the third quarter ended September 30, Qurius made a voluntary payment of $2.4 million from the proceeds of its sale of its Multiplus subsidiary, a Norwegian unit not involved in the Dynamics market.

Sage is committed to having a Summit user conference in 2010, but just how has not been decided. Sue Swenson, CEO of Sage North America, is considering having Summit at the same time as the Insights reseller conference. Either holding them concurrently or consecutively in the same city offers the potential for saving travel costs for vendors and Sage itself.
