RANDOM THOUGHTS: MOUNTED IN ALASKA

"Mounted in Alaska" seemed like an enticing name for a TV reality show. I thought maybe it was a series about Bristol Palin, but it’s just some stupid story about taxidermy. Considering that Palin Jr. was paid $262,500 paycheck in 2009 by The Candie’s Corp. as an ambassador for its teen pregnancy prevention campaign. The foundation is also considering hiring Charlie Sheen for an anti-cocaine abuse campaign and Willie Nelson to combat marijuana use. Republicans wanted to pay Levi Johnston, father of Bristol’s baby, to keep his mouth shut Read more...

DYNAMICS CLOUD ERP IN 2012

Microsoft was supposed to outline plans for going to the cloud with its financial applications during the keynote speeches at the Convergence user conference in Florida this morning. A message was delivered by CEO Steve Ballmer and Kirill Tatarinov, head of Microsoft Business Solutions that ERP would go to the cloud in the next major release of the product. But that message wasn't as clear as the plan outlined by Tatarinov in a press conference that followed the presentation.

MICROSOFT DELAYS PARTNER PROGRAM

Microsoft has delayed the start of the certification requirements of its new partner program. Slated to go into effect on May 1, the requirements have been postponed until October 1 and there are already bets that further delays are likely. This apparently affects all levels from SPA, the general partner tier, through the silver and gold certification levels. Word about this decision started being delivered to VARs about a week ago, but it seemed very clear that not everyone got the news at the same time and some organizations heard about it far more recently. The program is viewed as potentially driving many smaller resellers from the channel since achieving some certifications would mandate for staff than they have.

CONSOLIDATION OVER THE DECADE

The Microsoft Dynamics community website reminds us that it’s been 10 years since Microsoft purchased Great Plains, taking a place that was routinely on the 100 Best Places to Work list and turning it into something that can only see that list from afar. With Infor Global going after Lawson Software and Epicor and Activant getting nailed together to form one company, it’s a good time to think about what hasn’t happened in that 10 years. The mid-market business hasn’t turned out to be the $10 billion business Microsoft thought it was getting. And while we have fewer companies, there aren’t fewer product lines. Read more...

MICROSOFT VAR FRANCHISING DEAD

Andrew LeviThe possibility that the Microsoft channel would be re-organized through a handful of franchisors dealing with many of the smaller resellers has died.  The phrase one reseller used was “It’s dead. Dead. Dead.” Plans had been publicly discussed by Interdyn, a consortium of Dynamics resellers, with the effort led by Interdyn Socius CEO Jeff Geisler and Interdyn AKA owners Alan Kahn and Jack Ades. Aztec Systems of Houston was also considering building a franchise organization Read more...

SERERRA, INTACCT; NO, UH … NO. YES

Vijay SahaTwo issues ago, this newsletter reported that the Sererra Consulting Group, a reseller based in Irvine, Calif., was carrying multiple cloud products, including Intacct. That was followed last week by a report from Intacct VP Taylor Macdonald that Sererra wasn’t an Intacct reseller, even though its website seemed to state it was. Then a couple of days later in an interview, Sererra CEO and founder Vijay Saha, said Sererra was an Intacct reseller, which was followed the next day by an announcement that Sererra had indeed signed with Intacct. In any event, Sererra is a SaaS specialist that also carries NetSuite, SAP’s Business ByDesign and Salesforce.com. Read more...

Embezzlement by a former Fullscope employee, which was discovered shortly after its purchase by Edgewater Technology on Dec. 31, 2009, has cost the company about $1.1 million.  Those costs were outlined in the form 10-K that Edgewater, filed with the SEC last month.
