SOVOS GETS INVESTMENT

Andy Hovancik, SovosSovos, which markets indirect tax products, says it has received an investment from European-based private equity firm, HG Capital. The investing firm described its action as buying a majority stake in Sovos, taking over that role from Vista Equity Partners, which will retain what was described as "a significant minority stake in Sovos." The actual size of the investment was not disclosed.

AVALARA EMBEDDED IN SHOPIFY

Marshall Kushniruk, AvalaraAvalara's Compliance Cloud system has been embedded in Shopify Plus. It is a relationship that the sales and use tax company hopes will become a model for ecommerce. Shopify wrote the integration for the cloud application so that Avalara will automatically calculate tax for each invoice line item in real time in the Shopify Plus shopping cart. "Anybody that becomes a Shopify customer becomes an Avalara customer," says Marshall Kushniruk, Avalara's EVP of global business development.

I was thinking that it would be more fun to use the system of the game show "Russian Roulette", in which the contestants stand in a circle on a game platform.

MICROSOFT CHUCKS CONVERGENCE

Andy Vabulas, I.B.I.S.Good-bye, Convergence; hello, Envision. And this week, after a bunch of people have probably already set plans for attending the Dynamics Convergence conference in New Orleans, La., Microsoft announced it will be holding a more general business show called Envision. Microsoft had said last year it would change the Convergence format and there had already been talk among ISVs that they would stop attending or significantly cut back on booth space. That will probably go for much of the channel that has attended for years.

AVALARA PLANS CONFERENCE

Scott McFarlane, Avalara Avalara has scheduled a conference, its first-ever, for May 10 and 11 in New Orleans, La. Since this publication announced the show in early December, this is just for those who might have missed that news. Called Crush 2016, the conference features training session, educational programs and of course CPE will be available for said events. Material covered will include VAT (value added tax) and landed cost tariffs; fuel and other excise taxes; exemption certificate,1099, W-9, and other tax document management; and tax returns processing and remittance.

DEMANDFORCE BUYER NAMED

Bob Briscoe, Internet BrandsInternet Brands has agreed to acquire Demandforce, one of Intuit's shortest-lived, high-profile acquisitions of the Brad Smith era. Demandforce publishes web-based marketing software. The deal is expected to close next month. No price was disclosed. Founded in 2003, Demandforce, acquired by Intuit during the tenure of its current CEO in 2012 for $424 million, offers communication, reputation and networking tools.

BURGUM TO SEEK N.D. GOVERNORSHIP

Doug Burgum, Arthur VenturesFormer Great Plains CEO Doug Burgum is seeking the Republican nomination to be governor of North Dakota. News wire stores say Burgum does not expect to win the endorsement from the party at the GOP convention, but will run in the Republican primary in June. New reports also say Burgum has criticized the state's GOP legislature on social issues. That includes its failure to pass legislation to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and that he has spoken about the importance of equal rights, inclusion and tolerance of others.

NET@WORK OWNERS BUY MAGENTO BIZ

Alex Solomon, Net@WorkNet@Work founders Alex and Eddie Solomon had acquired the Magento Practice of Pixafy. The purchased operation—now a Net@Work sister company—carries the name Pixafy Services, which brought about 43 employees with it, and will also serve as the reseller's Web and ecommerce arms. Net@Work merged its ecommerce operations into Pixafy Services.
