For those waiting with bated breath - and even for those waiting with unbated breath - the 2013 edition of Bob Scott's VAR Stars will be published on Friday, December 20. We're not superstitious, but why take chances with Friday the 13th? It's always an interesting issue regarding the mid-market VAR community and people will be surprised at its contents. So will I. This year, the always delicate matter of making estimates of revenue for companies that do not disclose it got more difficult with the spread of cloud products having an impact on average revenue.

Epicor Software is paying its new CEO Joseph Cowan $650,0000, in annual base salary according to a document attached to an SEC filing. That looks a little low for a company this size, but what do I know? Epicor also showed it is paying CFO Kathy Crusco $410,000 in yearly base salary, part of an agreement that spells out terms of her relocation to Austin, Texas, from California. She receives a one-time net payment bonus of $100,000. Since Epicor is a private company - the SEC filings are voluntary - we don't get proxies that recite the all compensation received by named executives of public companies.

NetSuite says it picked up three resellers in the British Isles. The press release issued this week says the company signed leading VARs. I think anytime a reseller is signed by a financial software vendor that organization is a leading VAR – and then I realize no one has heard of them. But in this case, since I don't know the channel over there, we'll take NetSuite at its word. The newbies are Covali and OSSM Cloud Solutions, both located in Dublin, Ireland; and Ensphere Consulting, Warrington, U.K. The Covali Group also handles the Qlikview business analytics line.

It's been a good recruiting season for Acumatica. On the heels of signing SWK Technologies, the Kirkland, Wash.-based cloud vendor signed ISM. In the last week, Acumatica says it has also signed Bennett Porter, so it's fair to say that the company has picked up some quality resellers at the same time. ISM has revenue of $7.1 million and SWK, $13.2 million, as listed in their recent VAR Star submissions, which points out what a combination those companies would have made if the merger announced a year ago hadn't fallen apart.

The fact that SAP enhanced Business ByDesign probably won't quiet those who say the product is dead. But it certainly has a lot of new features for a product whose future has been questioned. The additions include in-memory capabilities, meaning availability on the SAP Hana Platform. The company also announced what it called enhanced pricing flexibility that include expanded competitive pricing mechanisms.
