XP ANTI-VIRUS SUPPORT EXTENDED

Users of the Windows XP operating system get more than a year of additional anti-malware support. However, that does not change Microsoft's decision to make XP a non-supported operating system on April 8. Let's assume most accounting software VARs have moved beyond XP. Still, there are a lot of small businesses that have not. There are estimates that 20 percent to 30 percent of PC desktops worldwide run XP.

Avalara has scheduled Horizons, its first-ever user conference. The Bainbridge, Island, Wash.-based sales-and-use tax vendor will hold the event April 30 through May 2 at the Grand Hyatt, Seattle. Horizons 2014 is officially tagged as The Cloud Services & Digital Goods Tax Symposium. Among the speakers is Scott Peterson, director of governmental affairs for Avalara. The initial list of speakers draws public accounting and law firms.

Dynamics reseller Columbus has increased its projected EBITDA by 16.7 percent for 2013. The Copenhagen, Denmark-based company made the forecast based on a higher level of activity in its service business and a larger volume of sales of the company's software during the fourth quarter of last year. EBITDA before share-based compensation to about $12.8 million. It expects revenue will hit around $159 million.

Two long-time VPs are leaving Sage North America - Kevin Rooker, VP of sales management and operations, and Drew Macbeth, VP of sales. Rooker, who recently was given responsibility for channel communications, is reportedly going to healthcare communications company, Vocera. That would make sense since that company's EVP of Sales & Services, Paul Johnson, was an EVP at the former Sage Business Solutions unit from November 2007 through March 2011.
VERINT TO BUY KANA SOFTWARE

Verint Systems is buying Kana Software, a portfolio company of Accel-KKR, for $450 million. The private equity firm paid $48.9 million cash for Kana in 2009 so investors have done well. Kana specializes in customer service products, including self-service tools such as chat and web self-service, along with social media monitoring. Verint markets what it calls Actionable Intelligence solutions to capture and analyze customer transactions.

With the National Retail Federation holding its Big Show in New York City next week, the wires will be drenched in stories about retail systems. That includes Acumatica, I believe a first-time exhibitor, which is introducing the Acumatica Retail Management Solution, described as "as complete system for retailers that combine Magento eCommerce and Point of Sale technology built on the Acumatica platform." The product is actually coming from Intuitive Tek of Lakewood, Colo., which is led by president Brian Storrs and Doug Hellenback, VP of operations. Also debuting is Mobile 2.0 for its Prism system from Retail Pro International.
INFOR TURNS PROFIT IN 2Q

Infor, which has been investing heavily in product development, broke into the black for the second quarter ended December 31. The company has been built via aggressive acquisitions and the resulting debt has been a drain on earnings. But with the recent period, things clicked. Net income for the most recently ended period was $63 million, compared to a loss of $22.7 million the prior year. Quarterly revenue was $698.5 million, a rise of 2.3 percent from $682.5 million in last year's corresponding period.

SAP's operating profit moved up by 10 percent while IFRS revenue was up by 4 percent at constant currencies, according to preliminary financial results for the year ended December 31. That came as the year ended on a 2-percent rise software revenue for the fourth quarter, while operating profit for that period increased by 13 percent. We'll get the official explanation later as SAP does not hold its earnings call for the initial release of results.

Dynamics Master VAR Socius has made The Northlake Partners a sales affiliate. The Dublin, Ohio-based reseller says the acceptance of Northlake brings the number of organizations in its program to 19. Bothell, Wash.-based Northlake, led by managing partners, Tom Williams and Adam Herman, was founded in 2008.
BTERRELL NAMES KARNES AS PRESIDENT

Keith Karnes has been named president of the BTerrell Group, a Dallas-based accounting software reseller, and of CodePartners, its development arm. Karnes joined the company in April 2013 as director of Intacct Client Solutions. Before joining his current company, Karnes was president of Tenetus, a Dallas-based Intacct VAR, from September 2010 through February 2013.
