EXACT CUTS RESELLER FEE
- Thursday, 11 March 2010
- News and Analysis

Exact, which established a $10,000 annual reseller fee a few years ago, has cut the tab to $5,000 as it rebuilds its indirect channel. Exact had spent the last few years buying top VARs and using the annual fee to push smaller resellers together. But that’s changed and the company has begun pushing its Max, Globe and Synergy lines through its reseller base. While Exact still markets the Macola and Progression lines, they clearly aren't the priorities.

Fishbowl Inventory, which initiated a reseller program in October, has turned the effort into a two-level program, now giving the chance for those interested to become Fishbowl Preferred Resellers or Referring Consultants. The company had a channel program prior to that, but members were largely not traditional midmarket VARs who are the new targets.

When version two of SAP's Internet-based BusinessByDesign hits the market, it will be less expensive, simpler to use and provide more functionality, a top executive said earlier this month. Mark White, CFO of SAP North America, made the statement at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, but declined to provide more specifics since SAP plans to announce those at its May Sapphire conference.

U.K. VAR BUYS CLOUD UNIT WITH U.S. PRESENCE

K3, a U.K.-based Syspro reseller, has acquired DigiMIS, which provides cloud computing services and whose operations include data centers in London, Edinburgh and New York. DigiMIS, which had previously worked with K3, hosts Syspro and Dynamics for K3 customers. Based on results for the half ended December 31, DigiMis had an annual revenue run rate of $1.88 million. The purchase involved about $1.2 million in cash with earn-out arrangements that could raise the total to just under $2 million. K3, which specializes in the retail market, also acquired Pebblestone, a Dynamics reseller based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, which serves fashion wholesalers and garment manufacturers. I think there are two good reasons for keeping an eye on the Dynamics resellers in Europe. The first is Microsoft's acquisition of VAR-developed packages last fall and the second is the expectation that the Microsoft emphasis on fewer, larger VARs may be having an impact overseas as well and it’s worthwhile to see it works.

After just over four years in his positions, Heine Thorsgaard will resign as CFO of Columbus IT, an international Dynamics dealer based in Denmark, at the end of March. The reseller said Thorsgaard is taking a position as CFO with another Danish IT company starting April 1 and the company would begin an immediate search for a replacement. I am going to assume the timing is because since the 2009 results will be reported on March 29, the CFO has wrapped up his work there.

InterDyn Socius has acquired the Dynamics business from CBiz, the accounting, financial planning, and tax company that is getting out of the technology market. But what the Socius press release did not say was that it's also picking up the Syspro practice from Cleveland-based CBiz. Socius CEO Jeff Geisler said there are clients and demand for Sysopro in the Kansas City area. The company will also evaluate whether Syspro should be offered at its other offices.

SAGE NABS ODD INSIGHTS SPONSOR
- Thursday, 11 March 2010

Sage North America paid homage to co-opetition this year with its ability to snag a very interesting Platinum Sponsor for May’s Insights reseller conference. Top dog on the sponsor list is Microsoft SQL Server. Since SQL Server is a dominant package, the move hardly gives Microsoft an entree into the Sage channel it didn't already have. And I think that enterprising VARs could refute those who attack Sage for aging technology. "If Microsoft thought it was important to sponsor the conference, the company can't that badly of Sage's products." I'm sure something slicker could be put together with more time.

NetSuite is known for its aggressive marketing, which I once termed the whack-a-mole approach, and for deals to get end users to switch to its products. But this week Microsoft took a leaf from the SaaS vendor's marketing book and is offering $850 per user to customers who would like to back away from NetSuite.
