Intuit's top executives have been given executives, something that most have not seen in three years. Both CEO Brad Smith and CFO Neil Williams received bonuses for the year ended July 30. Neither received bonuses in fiscal 2011 or 2012. Smith got a bonus of $1.12 million while his base salary moved to $1 million for the current fiscal year.

Accounting firms in the channel fared well with this year's selection of the Intacct's Presidents' Club. Three of the eight firms selected were accounting firms including Armanino, CliftonLarsonAllen and LBMC Technologies. For Armanino, it was another award in what looks like a very good year. Earlier this month, the San Ramon, Calif.-based firm was named to the Microsoft Dynamics Inner Circle, the only U.S. accounting firm to make that group.

Infor has kicked off its annual partner summit in San Diego. But I'm sitting here in New Jersey writing about it. Because after an unexpected invitation to last year's show, this year's is a media blackout. (Not that I could have made it since we're heading for Alaska tomorrow.) In fact, Infor did not respond to questions about whether there was a show and official notification only arrived yesterday.

Someone asked the night before the official opening of Sage Summit if I thought there would be excitement. "I hope not," I replied. "Haven't we had enough change over the last two years?" There were no revolutionary announcements and generally, shows shouldn't produce shocks and surprises for attendees. No, the most important statement from the stage, made by Pascal Houillon, CEO of Sage North America, and reiterated by Guy Berruyer, CEO of that Sage Group was this: "We said what we are going to do and we have done it."
APPLE’S MOBILITY TRIUMPH

There's nothing new about the thought that Apple has done well with mobile devices. But sometimes seeing it displayed in day-to-day life is still jarring. For example, during one keynote presentation at Sage Summit there was one MacBook and at least one iPad used during stage demonstrations. Five years ago, it would have been difficult to imagine that the day would come with Apple products would make it into that arena.

Sage 100 had 13-percent year-over-year growth for the last year. The number was provided by Joe Langner, EVP of mid-market solutions. Langner gave those numbers, not reported in the Sage financial statements, and others during a briefing at the Sage Summit conference in Washington D.C. The number matches the 13-percent Dynamics growth that Microsoft reported for the year ended June 30. Neither company releases actual revenue for the product sales.

Avalara has begun a program to enlist payroll providers to sell its sales-and-use-tax software. This is in addition to programs to sign middle-market accounting software VARs and programs operated through vendors such as Sage North American. The payroll companies view sales tax issues as "an extension of compliance," says Pat Falle, SVP of sales for the Bainbridge Island, Wash.-vendor.

Tom Miller, veteran of the Sage and Dynamics channels, has joined Net@Work; as leader of the VAR's Channel Partner group. It's the second high-profile hiring by a reseller this month of a former Sage executive. That follows the earlier hiring of Sam Hunter by SWK Technologies of Livingston, N.J. Most recently VP of channel management for Sage North America, Miller will spearhead the channel alliance program of New York-based Net@Work.
MICROSOFT SACKS DYNAMICS PAMS

Microsoft has reportedly laid off about 60 partner account managers leaving smaller resellers confused about how they will be doing business with the company. The buzz is that there are still reps for nationally managed AX VARs, but everybody else is left with little way of interfacing with the company outside of websites. This is being read as a further step towards the validation of the view that AX is the favored child and that Dynamics GP, SL and NAV are somewhere down the list.
