No numbers were provided about individual regions in the interim statement for the third quarter of Columbus IT Partner. But the Danish Microsoft reseller noted that it has "experienced progress in revenue in the United States, United Kingdom, Norway and Russia. Cougar Mountain Software has introduced Cougar iVault, an online data storage and backup system. It is available for CMS accounting software, but is not limited to users of that package. Subscribers can also receive support from the CMS staff for setting up their backup and to address any issues that come up, along with round the clock monitoring of data.

Open Systems has moved into the Central American country of Costa Rica. The company's website has a photograph of the country's president cutting the ribbon of the Grupo Moreno in San Jose, Costa Rica, last month and says that "Grupo Moreno has partnered with Open Systems Costa Rica to launch the Open Systems product lines in Costa Rica."

ACTIVANT SEES YEAR REVS UP SLIGHTLY

Activant Solutions, which provides a variety of specialized accounting packages, says it expects to report revenue of $370 million to $371 million from continuing operations for the year ended September 30, slightly higher than the amount reported for fiscal 2009. Net income is expected to range from $27 million to $29 million, with the midpoint of that range 24.6 percent higher than a year earlier, excluding goodwill.

This newsletter last month reported statements by Doug Johnson, marketing VP for Acumatica, that the company had been winning business from other SaaS vendors. Johnson opined that it was actually easier to switch between Internet applications than between on-premise applications.

SAP has released an iPhone application that provides access to SAP Business One and is free to those with a maintenance contract with Business One 8 patch level 12 or higher. Users can receive alerts for specified events along with reports from Crystal Reports. The mobile application is available for the iPhone or the iPod touch with a minimum version 3.2 Mac OS.

POS specialist Radiant Systems, whose offerings include the CounterPoint line, continued on a tear as its third quarter ended September 30 resulted in net income more than double last year while revenue rose by 26 percent over the third quarter a year earlier. Earnings reached $7.5 million, compared to $3.4 million a year earlier with operating income having risen by 35 percent. Revenue was $89.2 million, up from $70.9 million.

DELTEK GROWS, BUT WHITHER VARS?

Fueled by its purchase of Maconomy, Deltek had a strong September quarter in Europe and the United States. But I’m not sure there's much opportunity for resellers. Revenue rose to $65.2 million for the third quarter ended September 30, up 1.7 percent from $64.1 million a year ago. Deltek lost $4.2 million, compared to earnings of $6.6 million a year earlier. And the purchase accounting used in acquisitions reduced revenue by about $7 million in the quarter.

The words "cautiously optimistic" came out of the September quarter earnings reports a lot. But the other phrase that popped up several time was "raising our guidance" as many companies exceeded their expectations for the period just ended. No one is declaring that the economy is moving into a strong new up cycle. But most executives in the accounting software space were either happy or relieved as they ended the quarter.
