SAP CEO: BBD A CATEGORY KILLER

The statement from Bill McDermott, co-CEO of SAP, did make me smile “We had the best quarter ever with Business By Design.” I’m with the doubters at NetSuite on this one—that didn’t take much. In fact the other co-CEO, Jim Hagemann-Snabe, said more than “250 customers signed up for BBD. We are comfortable we will reach more than 2000 in 2011.” He continued the BBD has a faster unit growth rate than R3 did. Excuse me. Didn’t R3 have a bit of a higher price point? But dwelling on the past problems is the wrong thing. As SAP delivered its results for the quarter ended December 31, McDermott extolled the cloud-based application: “This is a category Killer. This will change the software game in 2011.” Somebody spent a little too long drinking at the vision Kool-aid cooler.

Intacct continues to do well in recruiting accounting firms as resellers. Its latest slide deck shows McGladrey on board, as well as Clifton Gunderson, which it formally announced. McGladrey joined via its acquisition of Intacct partner Caturano, but Intacct VP Dan Druker says other offices are now carrying the product. That's a pretty good coup and I'll put this in my quality firms that Intacct needs category. Also onboard was Synergy Business Solutions, a Dynamics SL VAR. And comes from owner Jered Cady help spell out how companies make these decisions.

THOUGHTS ON FRANCHISING

In 1989 I attended a meeting of Entre franchisees in Kauai. Among people who were there, I later learned, was Randy Johnston of K2 Enterprises fame. I suspect others from that by generation are also active in the mid-market accounting software world. The franchise companies – ComputerLand, MicroAge, Entre, Connecting Point – are a memory. Although there’s only one official announcement of a reselling operation interested in setting up franchising, there are reports circulating that up to three might be in the works with Microsoft’s blessing. The only announced plan is by Interdyn, which is putting together a plan. But one reseller is betting on Tribridge, which just raised several millions for expansion. Read more...

This is one of those items that doesn’t have immediate implications for the mid-market, but may well down the line. The company has anted up $350 million for SAP Ventures Fund 1 to be invested in software and software-enabled service companies. Although SAP has been doing this kind of thing for several years, it said the new fund structure would allow it to move more quickly. Read more...

Instead of holding its annual Synergy reseller conference in the fall in the San Francisco area, AccountMate is opting for a series of one-day sessions in three different metropolitan areas. A recent company newsletter told resellers it planned on round-table events near airports in San Francisco, Chicago and Newark, N.J. The company plans to hold a traditional conference in 2012 and then alternate with the one-day sessions thereafter. I get to go to Newark instead of San Francisco this year? Oh, joy.

While Microsoft has been loudly promoting “to the cloud” in its television advertisement, I am sure there are people like me who keep thinking “but they don’t have anything in the ERP world.” Well, now the vendor, which I think is accurately described as having poo-poohed SaaS, is trumpeting loudly with yesterday’s introduction of CRM Online.
