SHIFT TO CLOUD DENTS CDC RESULTS

CDC Software, which owns the Ross and Pivotal product lines, reported a sharp drop in net income for the year ended December 31 as revenue rose by 4.4 percent over 2009 totals.  Net income for 2010 was $6.4 million, down from $22.3 million the prior year. Revenue for the most recently ended year was $212.9 million, an increase from $203.9 million for 2009. The bottom line was held down by a restructuring charge of just under $5 million. Read more...

EPICOR STARTS EPICOR U

Epicor Software has launched Epicor University, which it described as new center of excellence for education for customers, partners and employees. The initiative will provide end-user training through a variety of means, including user guides, classroom courses and certifications, along with an online help system. There are also more than 100 embedded courses associated with Epicor 9.

Through June 24, Microsoft is offering new purchasers of many of its Dynamics products in the United States the ability to buy one user and get two additional users for free. The promotion applies to Dynamics GP, NAV and SL (but not AX) and to those purchasing either the advanced management or business essentials foundation pack. SYSPRO LINKS WITH AVALARA

Syspro has become the latest accounting software vendor to hook up with sales-and-use tax publisher Avalara. The company will offer AvaTax for Syspro, which provides the engine to keep up with the changes in taxes, along with the calculations of the required levies.

DELTEK LOSES TWO TOP VPS

Carolyn ParentIn two sentences in an SEC document, Deltek, which markets project accounting software, announced yesterday the departure of two of its top executives. It said that on April 1, Richard Lowrey would cease to serve as EVP of Deltek Engineering, and Carolyn Parent would no longer be EVP and general manager of its GovCon operations. That changes a reorganization that had produced the new positions barely a year ago.

THE WAR TO GO UPMARKET

George KlausERP vendors that have good high-end packages are increasingly moving into the Tier 1 space, at least into the divisions and department of companies that use an enterprise-level application to run their financial operations.  The signs are abundant. NetSuite this month signed an agreement with Informatica which will integrate NetSuite and Tier 1 products. Also this month, Epicor CEO George Klaus stated, “We are going upmarket” and noted that Epicor 9, which is making the effort possible, can handle about 3,000 concurrent users.

EPICOR SEES SAAS GROWTH AHEAD

Epicor logoEpicor expects sales of its Epicor Manufacturing Express Edition, the cloud version of Epicor 9, are going to expand significantly over the next two years. Speaking this week at the 1st Annual Signal Hill Technology Conference, CEO George Klaus said there were about 150,000 small and medium manufacturers “that we can sell our SaaS solution into.” The company had about 40 customers last year following the product's introduction and Klaus predicted user growth will boom.

THE AGING OF DYNAMICS GP

Comments this year by NetSuite CEO Zach Nelson that Dynamics GP had disappeared from his company’s view as a competitor got me thinking that maybe the product is showing its age. A talk with a friend whose company uses GP produced an earful. He complained that the payroll provided for only vacation and holidays – for personal days the company had to buy Advanced Payroll, and generally, that the need to buy additional functions was pain and that Microsoft had been pumping out upgrades with little change in functionality. TECTURA SELLS GERMAN UNIT

Tectura, which seems to be reshaping itself, has sold its 51-percent interest in Tectura Berlin to Uwe Bergmann. Tectura Berlin also owns a majority of Tectura Dresden and the operations are expected to adopt new names by the end of May. Terms were not released. This follows on the departure of founder and former CEO Terry Petrzelka early this year. His position was filled by Duane Bell, previously CFO. Read more...

Nonprofit vendor Serenic is continuing to build its international channel. It hadn’t issued a press release about a new VAR since May last year when it added the Touchstone Group in the United Kingdom. But it has already made two such announcements in 2011 with the enlistment of another U.K. dealer Probitas, and Cherry-T in the Netherlands. Read more...
