AVALARA SIGNS PARTNERS

Avalara-LogoAvalara is continuing its signing of a broad array of vendors to utilize its sales tax engine. In the latest crop are Hotcakes Commerce and Jobscope, which markets ERP software for engineer-to-order businesses. Both have become Avalara Solution providers whose users can use AvaTax within their application; Hotcake users for calculating sales tax on each quote and the same for Jobscope on each invoice.

MICROSOFT'S SALESFORCE DEAL

Satya Nadella, MicrosoftThere's a lot of speculation about Microsoft's recent agreement to connect Salesforce.com's CRM application to Microsoft Office and Windows. The result is to be Salesforce for Windows and Windows Phone 8.1 with a preview planned for the fall and general availability next year. The other offspring of this deal is to be Salesforce for Office 365. There are also plans for a new Salesforce App for Outlook. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described the deal as helping "customers thrive in a mobile and cloud-first world."

INFOR ADDS TECH, CLOUD LEADERS

Matt Breslin, Lisa Pope, InforInfor has hired Matt Breslin to lead sales of Infor's Platform Technologies and Lisa Pope to lead sales of the company's CloudSuite. Both were hired as SVPs reporting to president Stephen Scholl. Previously VP of platform and analytics for SAP, Breslin is responsible for sales of the technology stack, including Infor's ION middleware, Ming.le social collaboration platform and Analytics. Pope was previously SVP at QAD and besides leading efforts in cloud and SaaS products she is also responsible for the Upgrade X program.

DELTEK PURCHASES AXIUM

Chris Heim, AxiumDeltek has acquired Axium, a company that markets accounting and project management application to architecture and engineering firms. The segment is already a key market for Deltek and the Herndon, Va.-based company said that Axium has more than 2,200 A&E customers in North American with most of these having fewer than 250 employees each. Terms were not announced. Clark Haley, CEO of BCS/ProSoft, a Deltek reseller, applauded the deal.

NET@WORK BUYS ADSS ABILA BIZ

Robert Campbell, ADSS GlobalNet@Work, which is relatively new to the nonprofit business, this week expanded those operations by acquiring the Abila practice of ADSS Global. Based in New York City, Net@Work got into the market last year with the purchase of Huckstep & Associates, whose former owner, Jeannie Huckstep, is nonprofit practice director for Net@Work. The Abila nonprofit line, including Abila MIP Fund Accounting, was sold by Sage last year to Accel-KKR the investment firm that started Abila. Both Net@Work and ADSS are Sage resellers.

TRACKING SUMMIT 2014 EXHIBITS

sageThere's been a great deal of debate about Sage Summit 2014 conference in online groups. The debate is over the impact of the cut-rate pricing for users, the July Las Vegas location and some general distaste among resellers who don't think Sage is all that great to its resellers any more. A handy measuring stick is the number of exhibits for the event to be held July 28 through 31. Sage dramatically hiked the cost of booth space, while going for the uniform unibranding look. To date, I count 102 sponsors and exhibitors, which seems to me is up significantly from just a week ago.

INTUIT PLANS BIG FALL SHOW

Brad Smith, IntuitIntuit is planning a show for the fall and it sounds like its competition with Xero is triggering a full-scale press. The show, called QuickBooks Connect, kicks off on October 21 in San Jose, Calif. Apparently, Intuit is talking of attendance of 4,000 to 7,000, bringing together small business owners, accountants, developers and entrepreneurs. The show kicks off on October 21 in San Jose, Calif. Xero has already said it will postpone plans for its second Xerocon to 2015.

BRIT FIRM GETS MICROSOFT ERP HONORS

HSOThree American businesses were chosen as finalists for Microsoft's award for Enterprise Resource Planning. But the winner was Surry, England-based HSO Group, which markets Dynamics AX and CRM. The companies were part of a laundry list of winners and finalists as Microsoft this week released Partner of the Year honorees in the run up to the 2014 Worldwide Partner Conference. HSO operates in retail, manufacturing, distribution and services and says it has more than 350 professionals worldwide.

SUBSCRIPTIONS RAISE QAD REVS

Karl Lopker, QADQAD, which makes manufacturing software, is in the same boat as everyone else. Or should we say on the same cloud as a 53-percent increase in subscription revenue from cloud software sales helped the company to an 11-percent revenue increase for the first quarter ended April 30. The Santa Barbara, Calif.-based company also sliced its loss to $76,000, compared to a year-earlier loss of $1.3 million and posted operating income of $298,000 in the most recently ended period, as opposed to an operating loss of $1.7 million a year ago.
