XERO CUSTOMERS; 2014 LOSS UP

There is always the glass half-empty, half-full view. In cloud software, it tends to be unimportant if there is water in the glass as long as there's a big glass for lots water in the future. So when Xero reported its results for the year ended March 31, the question of how much it lost is probably not the most important issue as we've learned from NetSuite. It's about grabbing market share for cloud products. This is not a flip argument. Remember when Amazon wasn't making any money and that was a major issue.

Let's just say that the goals of Intuit CEO Brad Smith are not modest. When it comes to low-cost cloud applications, "Our goal is to win ever new small business customer and to win every cloud decision." Whatever the chances of that are, the results for the second quarter ended April 30 were very good. Net income was $1.37 billion, a 6-percent increase from $1.29 billion in last year's corresponding period. Revenue was $3.79 billion in the recently ended period, up 7 percent from $3.54 billion a year earlier.

Acumatica's chief marketing officer, Stijn Hendrikse, has moved to a sister company. "I am still at Acumatica because they don't have my replacement yet," Hendrikse said this week. However, his job for the present and future is as CMO and managing director at MightyCall and Infratel. Hendrikse came from Microsoft in March 2012. Behind these companies is Serguei Beloussov, founder and chairman of Acumatica, Infratel, Parellels, and founder and CEO of Acronis.
NETSUITE: THE ART OF THE SHOW

NetSuite broke new ground in exhibit hall management for this midmarket accounting business this year, highly effective management. At least, it did one thing not seen at most (if any) accounting conferences in the last two decades, setting the entrance to the keynote hall through the exhibits and leaving time between breakfast and the 9 am keynote. This is obviously a benefit to paying exhibitors. It turned out to be a much longer time than expected to see exhibits when the San Jose Convention Center technical system wasn't up to snuff, a fact likely to play in negotiations.

Intuit added 165,000 QuickBooks Online subscribers over the last year and Xero tacked on 157,000. So how many are available to FreshBooks, Sage One, Wave, Kashoo and who knows how many other low-accounting products? We know not everyone will make and executives are starting to point to a coming shakeout. In Sage's first-half earnings webcast earlier this month, chief executive Guy Berruyer rattled off some names and said he could think of at least 10 others in the United Kingdom. "I don't expect them all to make it," he said. Neither do most of us.
EPICOR SPINS 2Q RESULTS

It was all an odd schedule--a company holding its earnings conference call 12 days after it filed the 10-Q for the quarter and the CEO bragging about the progress the company has made since he joined in October. Of course, later in the earnings call, CEO Joseph Cowan denied a Wall Street Journal report that Epicor Software is for sale. That was after he reported the company's recent Insights conference was, "The most surprising and motivational event I have ever attended."
EXACT MULLS U.S. ONLINE PLAN

Exact is trying to figure out a better way to market its Exact Online application in the United States and may decide to involve its Macola VARs. The product is available on the Intuit App store. But since the introduction of the cloud product earlier this year, 26 companies have purchased it and Exact has labeled the progress as being slightly behind plan. "It seems difficult to find QuickBooks customers who are ready to go for an industry solution," Erik van der Meijden said during this months' earnings webcast for the first quarter ended March 31.
QBES HITS 100K SUBSCRIBERS

QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions hit 100,000 subscribers during the third quarter ended April 30, a 17.9-percent rise from 85,000 a year earlier. It would be nice to intelligently discuss why this product keeps growing. But it's not material to results and does not get analyzed during earnings webcasts. Intuit has issued no press releases about the product, enhancements or its channel program for ages. It has awards for its QBES resellers, but unless the partner issues its own release, that information doesn't see the light of day.
SAGE UNVEILS X3 VERSION 7

Sage's introduction of X3 Version 7 last week was a formality. The website for the product – the only Sage midmarket package with its own website – was already packed with V. 7 info. More attention was paid to what Sage's Europe CEO Alvaro Ramirez meant when he said, "Our brand is a disaster." I'm of the opinion he didn't mean it quite the way it sounds but why hand competitors a recruiting tool? The remarks suggest that the rebranding campaign of putting the word "Sage" in front of all products has not worked as well as hoped. Version 7 will be first rolled out in on-premise form next month.
