COLUMBUS PUTS IT IN PRIVATE CLOUD

 Erik Ødemark, ColumbusGlobal Dynamics reseller Columbus has put its internal IT datacenter in a private cloud. The Copenhagen, Denmark-based VAR and software developer said that move has "improved our ability to service our customers better and faster than ever before. In a prepared statement, Erik Ødemark, corporate IT manager, said "This is an enormous advantage, when changes occur in the integration with customers and partners, and Columbus' consultants have to react very quickly to new decisions." THE PUBLIC: WINDOWS 8 DOES SUCK?

 Tami Reller, MicrosoftMicrosoft probably does not agree to the wording here (I’m gonna hear about this). But read this week’s headlines about often bad-mouthed update to the operating system. They have language like “a humbled Microsoft”, “A Reboot for Windows 8; What's Next for Microsoft?” “Can Microsoft really make a 'U-turn' on Windows 8?” and “Microsoft Falls as Windows 8 Sales Stumble to Slow Trickle.” Given the influence of these financial writers, maybe my wording isn't so bad.

MANAGING DATA TOPS AICPA LIST

AICPAManaging and Retaining Data emerged as the top issue 2013 Top Technology Initiatives Survey from the American Institute of CPAs. The No. 2 issue is Securing the IT environment. You may remember that this was once the Top 10 technologies and used to be issued before the second quarter of the year. But that was before it got mired in technology language goo and the Institute’s need to tinker with the format every year. I’ll repeat what I’ve said before which is that when it was the Top Ten technologies, it had a lot of headline appeal. Read more...

BLACKBAUD CEO'S PAY TAKES BIG DIP

Marc Chardon, BlackbaudCompensation for lame-duck CEO Marc Chardon fell by 29.3 percent and it’s the second straight year of double-digit declines for the outgoing leader of Blackbaud. Chardon will leave the nonprofit vendor once a successor is named. In the meantime, the Charleston, S.C.-based company reported his 2012 pay fell to $2.2 million, down from $3.1 million in 2011. And it’s off by 52.2 percent from the $4.57 million he got in 2010.

BLACKBAUD HAPPY DESPITE DOWN NET

BlackbaudThe bottom line at nonprofit vendor Blackbaud continued to feel the impact of last year’s acquisition of Convio. Net income of $2.7 million for the first quarter ended March 31 fell 3.4 percent from $2.8 million in the first quarter of 2012. That was primarily the result of a $3.2 million restructuring charge related to layoffs in January. However, executives were happy with the results, saying they had realized greater savings than anticipated from post-acquisition cost-cutting.

ACUITY PICKS UP BIZNET

June Jewell, Acuity Business SolutionsAcuity Business Solutions, one of two resellers to emerge from the dissolution of Acumen Advisors, has joined the BizNet channel program. A Deltek premier reseller, Acuity, based in Reston, Va., will sell BizNet's Excel Suite to the Deltek Vision market. Acumen was formed by the merger of two Deltek VARs and although the split caused the creation of two new ones, they have the same pre-marriage leaders. June Jewell owns Acuity while Kevin O'Connor went into business under the name Full Sail Partners. Meanwhile, BizNet has announced the second annual conference, ExcelaPalooza will be held September 24 and 25 at the Rosewood Crescent Hotel in Dallas. It's sort of worth writing about it just for the name.

EPICOR INTROS MOBILE FOR DISTRIBUTORS

Epicor LogoEpicor Software has launched Epicor Mobile Business Analyzer, designed for the support of executive-level decision making for wholesale distributors. The app, available only for the iPad, is built on top of the Epicor Business Analyzer and enables users to access key business measures and alerts from Epicor Prophet 21, a wholesale distribution financial application.

LOOKING AT INFOR’S NUMBERS

Infor logoThe more astute in the audience may have figured this out. But apparently with Infor’s senior note exchange last year, it ended up as a public reporting, but not publicly held company. For the third quarter ended February 28, the company lost $72.8 million, up from the $29.1 million in red ink in last year’s corresponding period. Revenue for the most recently ended period was $663.4 million, up from $644.7 million. Read more...

EDGEWATER SALES HOT, BUT ...

 Shirley Singleton, Edgewater TechnologyEdgewater Technology, a Dynamics reseller, ended its first quarter with strong sales activity. But that was not enough to counter a slow start to the period. The company reported a loss of $889,000 for the three months ended March 31, compared to net income of $175,000 in last year’s corresponding period. Revenue fell to $23.5 million for the most recently ended three months, down 7.1 percent from $25.3 million a year earlier.  And other metrics - service revenue, gross profit, utilization - were all down.

COLUMBUS REVS FLAT

Thomas Honoré, ColumbusRevenue for Columbus, the Danish Dynamics reseller, was about $40 million for the first quarter ended March 31, virtually unchanged from a year earlier. In this week's interim management report, the Copenhagen-based company said EBITDA was about $1.3 million, a 32-percent increase. Columbus said software revenue was on the same level as a year earlier, while a rise in income from consulting services helped produce the sharp improvement in EBITDA.
