SWK NABS ACUMATICA AWARD

Sage reseller SWK Technologies took home the award for the largest Acumatica Deployment of the Year at the cloud vendor’s Partner Summit this week. New to the Acumatica fold in the last year, SWK leaders, including CEO Jeff Roth, got to be part of the first official announcement at the Acumatica keynote. Many major awards were handed out during the morning, something that does not happen at a lot of mid-market publishers’ conferences. Alan Hardy, who joined SWK when it purchased his ESC Software earlier this year, received the Sales Execution Award for Executing Most Effective Sales Engagement.
KASHOO SIGNS LIBERTY TAX

The fact that Kashoo will now be privately labeled by franchisor Liberty Tax by itself is not important. The fact that this is the second such deal for the low-cost cloud software vendor–its first was Paychex in October—is very important. The most recent agreement was announced this week by Liberty CEO John Hewitt during the earnings webcast for his company's first quarter ended July 31. “We are testing an accounting package that our franchisees can used to provide small business bookkeeping services,” Hewitt said.

Sage tried to load the show floor with attendees at Summit in Las Vegas in July by piling big-name speakers on the keynote stage. Someone who has priced speakers says Magic Johnson’s fee is $60,000 “and you have to buy fuel for his jet.” Add in Karl Rove and Jessica Alba and lesser-known figures, Robert Gibbs and Biz Stone and the bill for bringing in some national press and the rest of the cost of conferences in Vegas and you get some big bucks.

The Randy and Andy parties are must-attend events at Microsoft’ Worldwide Partner Conference and Convergence. But now, formerly loyal Collins Computing, by Steve Collins -but whose most visible representative is president Randy Forkner. the Randy of the party name - has become an Acumatica VAR. The company, whose ERP line was previously limited to Dynamics AX and GP, has been selling Acumatica under the radar and has already become a Gold-level reseller for the cloud company. This will get some people’s attention.

Microsoft has probably taken the lead in having the unhappiest VARs. That’s because Sage resellers are more resigned to fate. But with the decision to drop many of the certification requirements to carry Dynamics GP, NAV and SL, Microsoft illustrated problems faced by companies like Microsoft, Sage and Infor. All were built from aggregating unrelated products. All face the need to deal with aging technology and move to the cloud. Infor is different in that it has to pay off $5.3 billion in debt. But all have squeezed the channel to get more income.

Clifton "Johnny" Laurent has lost the game of executive musical chairs as Sage adjusted leadership for Sage HRMS and the group handling Timeslips and DacEasy. Laurent, VP and GM of Sage HRMS, joined Sage in January 2006 and had worked in the Employer Solutions organization since June 2009. His duties are being transferred to Henry Benamram who heads Small Business Solutions effective September 8. Benamram, who has spent 22 years at Sage, started in France and then transferred to North America in 2012. He initially had responsibility of for Sage One, the company’s cloud product of the future, as part of a Sage One North America Group.
MYOB INVESTS IN ACUMATICA

Australian software vendor, MYOB has invested in Acumatica. Acumatica CEO Jon Roskill said today that MYOB, which is owned by Bain Capital, has made a “significant investment” and has taken a seat on the board. MYOB is also testing a cloud-based product, MYOB Advanced, which it built on the Acumatica platform. “We see a huge opportunity, said Gary Katzeff, national manager of MYOB’s Australian Enterprise Division. The announcement was made today at Acumatica’s Partner Summit in the Denver suburbs. It's an important move. In the cloud race, being able to show a solid financial base is important in raising a company's profile with everyone--the resellers, the ISVs, the customers and prospects.
M’SOFT EASES GOLD REQUIREMENTS

In a major surprise to the channel, Microsoft has dropped strict requirements for Gold resellers that carry Dynamics GP, NAL and SL. The changes do not affect requirements for selling AX and CRM. The development, which reverses years of hiking qualifications to sell the products, makes it easier for smaller dealers to carry the three financial packages because they will no longer have to employ a required number of personnel in a variety of categories, which had increased the staff size VARs needed to play the Dynamics game. I'll ask Microsoft for a comment, but I'm not sure its PR people work Saturday nights.
INTUIT PUTS REV REC IN THE CLOUDS

Intuit is transitioning its company by incorporating the move to the cloud into its accounting. The company is now recognizing desktop revenue over time, instead of recognizing license revenue at the time of sale, CEO Brad Smith said during this week’s earnings webcast for the year ended July 31. “This will push about $400 million from 2015 to future revenue,” he noted. One of the larger areas affected will be the desktop professional tax products, Lacerte and ProSeries, whose revenue will now be recognized more like subscription products.

VersAccounts has hired former Sage executive Liam Mullaney to lead its expansion into Europe. Based in Portland, Ore., VersAccounts says its products bridge the gap between low-end offerings like Xero and midmarket products offered by companies such as Sage. Mullaney, once CEO of Sage Ireland and now CEO of VersAccounts Europe, notes the company operates only via the channel and customers get access to all core modules: the required base system, Financial, Purchase to Pay, Order to Cash, Inventory, Logistics, Fixed Assets and Projects.
